Viola 'Mars'

I found a lovely violet plant today called Viola 'Mars'. The leaves are lance shaped with a dark center. It says on the tag that it blooms pink. Has anyone ever grown this variety?

Hi !

Funny foliage isn't it ?
Mine never make any bloom. It can make lots of buttons, plenty of them but none never make a flower or a pod. I think this hybrid is steril.
What is the use of a never flowering violet ? Donno :-)

All the best :-)
Thierry.

My plant has such beautiful foliage, that I really don't care if it blooms. Of course, if it does, that will be a bonus. But since your experience with the plant has resulted in no blooms, I shall not count on any. Thanks for the input.

I have not grown 'Mars' myself, but I have seen several reports that it is a shy flowerer.
BTW, this is not to be confused with the pansy of the same name (which rarely gets mentioned these days).

Yes, I had written a post that seems to have been deleted. I have no idea why that should happen.

I think I had mentioned that mine has never flowered, either. I also recalled that after thinking it did not survive in my Minnesota garden, it has made it through two or three cold winters already. It does lose most of the purple color on the leaves when the summer weather gets hot, though.

No, lol, that is the post I submitted back when I was convinced it had died on me :-) It turned out that it was alive and well, only I didn't recognize the plant! There still was a post here that got deleted for some strange reason.
