Violet seed sources / which best for naturalizing in lawn?

| My question has two parts:
First, do you know of any seed suppliers with a good selection of Viola, especially less common native eastern US species (such as V. conspersa - dog violet, V. fimbriatula - ovate leaved violet, V. lanceolata - lance leaved violet, V. sagittata - arrowhead violet)?
Second, which species other than Viola sororia (and its varieties or subspecies) are good for naturalizing in a lawn? More specifically, my lawn, which gets about 6 hours per day summer sun, and has average "silt loam" type soil.
Thanks for any help. |

| Hello, lrobbins -- I know virtually nothing about violets, but part of your question has me intriqued. I'm trying to find out how to eradicate a lawn full of wild violets; are the ones you are asking about for naturalizing your lawn the wild, or cultivated, variety? The wild ones taking over my entire lawn are beautiful, producing small purple flowers in the spring, but they are invasive in this part of the country, so I need to dispose of them. I would love to know that someone would enjoy them so that mother nature's efforts are not lost. If these are, indeed, a variety you are asking about, I will more than happily send you as much as you want! If my ignorance of them is screaming through this thread, please just ignore me and wait for a knowledgeable response! ;-) |
