Are these Violets?

We always called them Johnny-jump-ups when I was growing up. Are they actually violets of some sort?

Thank you!

RE: Are these Violets?

Greetings Peggy
These are not violets, but violas. You were on the right track with Johnny Jump up,although by the colours these would appear to be hybrids that are not too far away from Viola Tricolor. They are promiscuous little devils and will cross and seed freely if left to do so.The belong to the Melanium section of the genus Viola;generally regarded as the Pansy side of the family.I hope you enjoy them I alaways let mine seed around and enjoy what come up each year.If you find a particularly attractive one you can always propagate it from a few basal cuttings. good growing John

RE: Are these Violets?

Thank you very much, John. I have them everywhere in every flower bed, they do like to spread! I like them a lot, though, and they don't seem to be very deep rooted so I leave them go. They seem like a very cheerful flower to me. They fill in a lot of spaces for me at this time of the year when not a whole lot is blooming yet.

A friend of mine wanted some of them and I didn't want to give her the wrong name when I gave them to her. When I think of pansies I always think of those annual packs at the store.

Thank you again,

Peggy In Bucks County, PA
