Pansies in water garden???

OK, I'm assuming pansies ARE, IN FACT, a type of violet or viola or something related.

My question is, I have a couple dozen pansies STILL hanging on from last fall's planting, but with the true summer weather we're finally getting, it shouldn't be long.

My biggest bed, I'm gonna leave undisturbed and let them go to seed, and see if I get volunteers, but a different bed, I want to amend some and add some new plants. I have impatiens, with the soil washed off their roots, stuck bare-root in my water garden, and they're doing well, the established ones are growing and blooming like crazy, and the new ones are starting to grow... I'm wondering if the same thing or something similar might work with pansies, as that constant flow of water would keep their temps lower than the outside area... or will they rot?

Or can I pot them and put them in shallow water, like that? I've found many plants not listed as aquatics that will grow in that environment if you do it right... just thinking this may be a way to save my pansy blooms for just a little while longer.

Thanks in advance for your advice!
Jeff

Jeff,
...Good question. I'd expect pansies to do better in water than in soil in water; just a feeling. You might like to search on pansy and hydroponics, maybe. It would be interesting to know how you get on; good luck.
