Pansies from seed

I've never raised pansies from late-summer sown seed, although I have raised them from spring-sown seed. This year I want to try raising them from late-summer sown seed.

If any of you have practical experience in doing this under eastern US conditions, please post some advice.

I have cold frames for wintering the seedlings. I live in an area where fall-planted pansy plants do not always survive the winter in the open.

Hi !

I'm not kind of pansies (I've always found the blooms so flabby - sorry for that) but, if they have the same behaviour as violet, some cold can help for germination: however it's mainly depending on species. European violets need some cold, japaneses don't.
Just try, you'll see :-)

Regards
Thierry.
