Okay violet aficionados.... I have a question.... :)

Okay all you violet aficionados.... I thought I knew violets but.... I need to know some tidbits of information to help me id a violet I have. There was some mention about violets and how some arise (flowers) from the bottom of the plant and some from plant/leaf stems. I googled a little and they called stems that produce flowers (some species do some species don't right?) "common stems" . My question is there must be some scientific/botanical word for violets or violet stems (flowering) that arise from the base of the plant and those that arise off leafy stems. Also what are stipules (not that it has anything to do with it) . While googling violets trying to id I find alot about stipules.... Anyway.... thanks for any help and look to the post on "What is this small violet?" for reference on the violet I"m trying to id. :)
Here is a link (while they describe this yellow violet) on what I mean by separate flowers and stems:

RE: Okay violet aficionados.... I have a question.... :)

well, it's violet season in australia and perhaps not so much in your hemisphere, so i'll try to answer....
part of the way violet species can be divided up is 'stemmed' and 'unstemmed' or caulescent and acaulescent in botanical latin. in caulescent plants/species, the flower stems, (peduncles) arise from the joints between the stems and leaves, or axils. in acaulescent plants, the flower stems arise directly from the crown on the plant. a stipule is an appendage at the base (or insertion) of a petiole. (a petiole is the stem part of a leaf.) the leafy part associated with a flower is a bract. it could be called a bractlet when, as in sweet violets and others, it appears on the flower stem or peduncle. pedicel seems to be interchangeable with peduncle. i have seen and heard both words used. there are some good pics and a brief dictionary in doretta klaber's 'violets'.

(so, can i ask for some seed now?!) ;) )
rob...
