What happened to my violets?

celloangel

Hello, hope you can help me. I just walked through my perenniel garden here in central Arkansas, and a big clump of violets lay open and dead. The bottoms of the stems were mushy and looked like they had a million tiny gold (eggs?) on them. Looked like Oscote fertilizer, but smaller. There is some white fuzzy stuff and some white ganglian looking stuff, but the bottoms of all the plants were like root rot. Any ideas of what it could be or how to stop it from spreading? Insects maybe? Do slugs lay eggs? Thanks a bunch. Celloangel
