sounds like "rodney davey" to me.
if that's the case, the variegation becomes less distinct as the season advances. it's a nice little plant and seeds about happily, but not so much as to be a problem.
i think it is suggested that it's a form of v. japonica. perhaps someone could shed some light on that?

Thank you for the suggestion. My idea of heavily variegated paled in comparison to Rodney Davey; there is more green to my violet foliage and the leaves are longer, not as wide. How frustrating not to have a good camera just now...I'll see if I can get someone to take a picture for me to post....

Rob, I had time this morning to search under mandshurica, and am certain I found my violet. The flowers are not remarkable, but the foliage is interesting so I've gathered some seeds from it....
