Pansies dying.. help!

Hey everyone. I just planted pansies along the front entrance walkway of my home. We just moved in here in March, and the previous owner had lots of beautiful pansies along the same walkway, so I assumed they'd do well. Sadly, that is how it's gone with ALL of the beautiful plants here (the previous owner kept MANY, many plants that I just can't keep up with)...

Anyway, they were planted on Monday night, I sprinkled fertilizer on top and have been watering them. They are mostly all limp, lying on their sides.

What did I do?! I am so embarrassed, as I have always seen violets as very easy to take care of... Help! I have a party at the end of October and really wanted everything to look nice. It is possible to overwater them? How much water do they need?

I don't think it's likely that you overwatered them, especially not in such a short amount of time -- pansies generally like fairly moist soil (though certainly not soupy), so I'm guessing that either something ate them after planting, or the fertilizer caused the problem by burning the roots if too much was applied. You could dig one up to examine its roots and stem base if you think it was the former, and if so, you might have to strategize a control method or plant something less tasty for now. Otherwise, fertilizer burn would be the next likely suspect.
