what is this weed

Please what is this and how do I get rid of it. It is growing in the lot next door and these things get over 6 foot tall. The larger ones have stems that look like bamboo and are hollow inside. There are tons of them. I started cutting down but the inground clumps are there and need removed.

Thank you very much. Guess I will research but from your answer, I am assuming I am going to have problems getting rid of this stuff.
Any suggetstions????

Hi Dian,
Yes, this is a very argressivly spreading weed which is not easy to eradicate. I do not have any personal experience but if you search the Internet for Fallopia japonica / Polygonum cuspidatum / Japanese knotweed, you will find a lot about how other people fight with it.
