Strong, biodegradable alternative to landscape fabric?

This is for the canary reed grass I am inquiring about in another post- but figured it was worth asking it to everyone here.

I have one idea to mulch out this incredibly invasive grass- which is to lay down some "fabric", bury that in a few inches of purchased topsoil (just enough to hold the fabric down really), and expect the fabric to disappear within 2-3 years so that roots from the new plantings can search down into the rich soil below.

Any ideas on what material I could use? Over the next couple years, I would like to mulch out over one acre for orchards and gardens, as well as wildflower berms. BTW- cardboard doesn't work on the beast! Thanks again!
