replacing weeds w/ self sowing perennials

the last few years i have tried desperately to rid a property that i maintain of weeds. I would like to hear the suggestions of others, especially those that are drought tolerant and strong shade growers. Here in santa rosa my most successful weed replacement have been; ca poppy, mexican primrose, mint, towering jewel, swiss chard, gazania, Santa barbara daisy, coral bells and violets.

Your local office of your University of California Cooperative Extension Service should have readily available lists of plants native to California and specific to your area. Keep in mind that many of those plants some consider "weeds" are native plants, although others might well be the unwanted plants many think of as "weeds".
