Did I just pull a few fruiting weeds?

Hello all,

So I was doing some weed control and my stirrup hoe was amazing. But it isn't so amazing when it comes to these, so I hand pulled them and voila! They look like some kind of fruit / nut? Hmm I pulled a few of them in the corner of my backyard, but there aren't any fruit / nut trees around. There are a few citrus trees but these don't look like citrus seeds since they are golf ball sized! Curious to find out what they are...

Best I can tell from the picture is that you have a seed that has germinated and produced a stem.

Looks like you may have either horse chestnut or some species of buckeye seedlings. Both are trees with nuts that are not edible. They have poisons that some say can be leached out or heat treated. I think squirrels can eat them though and may have brought some to your place to bury and eat later.

My son attends Ohio State University....home of the Buckeyes. The very old looking metal lightposts on campus have the buckeye leaves as part of their design. They look similar to your photo leaves. It makes for very cool campus lighting!

I haven't seen a buckeye tree in Michigan....and don't tell just everyone that my son attends OSU, either :)
