Help Getting Rid of Wild Cucumber!

Posted by desertdance So.CA LowDesert (My Page) on

I finally figured out what this horrible viny weed is that is covering a ton of my yard. It's Echinocystis lobata, or Wild Cucumber.

Yesterday DH discovered dozens of large spiny green pods, and he threw one up the hill at me. Pictures on the web show that this is what we have.

How do I get rid of it?

One source lists Wild Cucumber as an annual and another, closer to you, as a perennial so it may depend on where it is growing whether it is one or the other. Your best source of information about how to control this would be your local office of your University of California Cooperative Extension service.

Here is a link that might be useful: Wild Cucumber

Thanks for the info kimmsr! The fruits are fat and 4-6" long! I'm glad I don't have a dog. Those spines would be hard on a pet!!
