Stinging Nettle

In 22 years of working in the garden in this house I never had such a burning experience and these were just very small nettle that I've heard can grow to 5'. I'ld actually like to know what other nettles are growing in southern Ca, because mine aren't the big leaved variety on the web. More of a pointed leaf with prickles. Anyway I'ld just like to be more informed in the future.. Debby

Could it be slender nettles. I don't know California plants but I think this one is widespread. Page down a bit on the link for photos of both male and female plants. The site indicates sparse hairs on this species. However, I think it is the kind that grows by me and it hurts, sparse hairs or not.

Could be the California Stinging Nettle (Urtica diocicca) or the Stinging Lupine (Lupinus hirsutissimus). The site below has a picture of the Stinging Lupine.
