Vegetable Garden Weed Control

I've read a lot of posts here about control/eradication of nutsedge in a general sense, but haven't found anything that speaks on control of nutsedge in vegetable gardens.

I realized, too late, that cultivating sedge-infested soil spreads them. So...my vegetable garden is full of them.

I've covered the non-planted areas of my garden (12'x 25') with an opaque, landscape weed barrier to keep the weeds in check during the vegetable season, but am interested in completely eradicating them with something safe.

Two questions:

1. Is there a safe product I can use in the vegetable garden during growing season?

2. Is there a product or process (i.e. soil replacement) I can use during the non-growing season to eradicate the sedge and its tubers?

Sedge is really, really evil stuff.

Thanks
