Blackberry vines-eradicating?

I have several areas in my garden that have single blackberry vines that must have been planted by passing birds. I would like to get rid of these before they take over. Is there some way to eliminate them? I have tried spraying with Roundup, but they are still persisting. Pulling them does not get the roots. Any ideas?

Dig them out. Requires more labor but is very effective.
