Is It Too Cold To?

I have dug up my trenches in front of all my beds which are surrounding them. The freshly turned earth prevents a lot of

the grass creeping in, under the rocks, and into the beds themselves. It is a major project to do it at least once a month . R'd-Up was suggested to me and I'd like to do it as soon as possible. Maybe that will be the last time! It's been down in the 20's yet a nite, is that a problem? The trenches/ turned earth are about 10 - 12" away from the fleur bed's plants. That grass crawls underground and is so hard to dig thru, it's like sod actually. My arms and shoulders just can't do it anymore. I actually have to see a shoulder specialist already. HELP Me Please, Jaemy

RU will kill only the green grass and it's root system. any ungreminated seed will remain viable.

if you want a true dead zone, you should put down a pre-em that will also kill the existing grass. i use Ortho ground clear, but be careful cause if it gets in bed that spot is dead for a full year! you cannot do this if the run off water from rains will wash it toward your beds.

David, thnx for the thoughts. RU will kill the grass before it has a chance to begin creeping into the trenches? I'm understanding you to say catch it before it has a chance to proceed, yes? w/Ortho (the run-off would be a problem for me). If you Do Then Think I'd be able to stop the growth in it's tracks, are our 40 degree days too cold to be effective? A neighbor suggested laying black plastic under the soil and then cover it with the freshly dug earth to keep all the light out so there'd be nothing to keep crawling grasses and weeds living???????
