Weeds in veggie garden

I usually hand pull most of the weeds in my vegtable garden but within the past week there are hundreds or so of these tiny little weeds. I try to pull them and the tops pull off, leaving the roots. Also, there's WAY too many to do this since they look like a cover crop or something.

I used Preen on the beds a few weeks ago but it's not working.

What can I do?

Get a hoe and use it to slice the plants off just below the surface then mulch. If you used preen are you using transplants for all of your garden. If so I salute you as I do not have that much patience. If you were planning on direct sowing better luck next year.

Laying down mewspaper and covering that with a mulch material would be another, less difficult, method of "weed" control.
