Help ID this weed?

This plant drives me NUTS. It grows like wild all around the perimeter of the house. I was able to yank one out yesterday without it popping off right at ground level & got to a root that extended a good 7' horizontally under this particular flower bed.

I suppose I should also admit I really don't know much about gardening... I'm assuming this is a "weed" but I really don't even know that for sure. TIA for any insight! =)
