Preventing Weeds in Rock and Mulch

I have almost two acres and have landscaped several large areas with either mulch or river rock. I was not able to put down weed fabric because it is on a slope and kids and dogs would just cause the mulch and rock to slide down hill.

I use Round-up to kill the weeds and grass that come up in these areas, but every few days new stuff comes up and it is never-ending. Is there some sort of spray or granules that would penetrate through the mulch and in between the rocks that would act as a pre-emergent to allow me to be pro-active instead of re-active in controlling weeds and grass?

If the rocks were put down more than two years ago you have dust, dirt, and organic matter from the air that has accumulated in the spaces between them and your "weeds" are rooting there, most likely. Many "weed" seeds collect on the vegetative mulches and root easily there too. You can continue spraying poisons around to try and control the weeds or you can dig and properly take care of this by pulling the rocks up and cleaning the accumulated soil from those spaces which will help, a lot.

Hi up in Idaho. I have a friend over in Colville Washington who uses Ronstar and seems quite pleased with the results. I think weed control a never ending problem. Be crossing Idaho Rte 90 end of May. Think good thoughts Steve in Baltimore County.
