GARDENING GUIDESWhat Your Weeds May Be Trying to Tell You
An invasion of weeds can reveal something about your soil. Here’s what is going on and what to do about it
Full StoryDoes anyone know how to get rid of mugwort? We have a new construction house and somehow ended up with a major infestation. The stuff is everywhere.
I can control it in beds by using the old 'wet newspaper and mulch' method.
But how can I get it out of my lawn? Will mowing it regularly get rid of it over a period of time by slowly starving the root? Or is what is left below mower height sufficient to keep it going forever?
I don't like using many chemicals, but I do sometimes use Roundup on other invasive weeds. However I think I read somewhere that Roundup is not very effective on Mugwort, and the only chemical that seems to work well sounds nasty enough that I don't want to go looking for it.
The infestation is much too large to realistically hand-pull, and besides the rhizomes persist with hand-pulling. To starve the rhizomes would require more hours of hand-pulling than exist in the day, especially since we are also coping with a major infestation of knotweed (which is what we use the Roundup on) and garlic mustard.
Help!
