Keeping weeds off under maple

I have a maple tree in my front yard (I think red maple) that's about 10 years old. I have grass and other weeds growing under it. All these years I've been pulling them by hand every week. Last year I planted some coreopsis that is working well. It has spread some. It'll probably take a few more years for it to spread all around. I planted some pansies and petunias on saturday.

Since Maples have surface roots, I've been afraid to go the newspaper and mulch route. I don't want to kill the tree by smothering the roots.

Is there a way to get rid of the weeds? Can I use any chemicals? I don't use any pesticide in my garden, but in this area, I'm fed up and am ready to use it.

Thanks for any help you can give me.
