How to rid of 'runner' weed

Other than the standard weeds invading my garden there are several types that are really short (less than an inch) which makes it hard to pull them by the root and they are all over the place, which mean pulling them wouldn't make sense. Any suggestions on how else to rid of them?

Chickweed and purslane are common, low growing plants that many people consider "weeds" and it that is what you have a good, heavy mulch will take care of them. The only time I see those in my gardens is when the mulch is digested by the soil bacteria or the wild turkeys kick it off the bed and leave the soil exposed for a bit.
