Tool for violets

I need help - a suggestion for a type of tool that will help me dig these things up. I was using a trowel today, after it rained, so I thought the ground would be softened but between that and the grass roots I am having a hard time breaking the surface to get the violet roots. My hands feel raw from the trowel and am looking for a type of tool that will get that bulb root out a little easier. Thanks.

First thing to try is a "potato fork" shoved in with a heel and pries, thereby loosens the soil around them so that the roots come out easier. However, for violets, you might next try an atomic bomb. The roots that remain can re-emerge, so keep at it! Even non-selective herbicides have a tough time with these.

Ugh. Thanks. There are so many! Maybe I'll just use a spade so I don't have to use my hands so much.
