Overrun with weeds

My husband and I just bought a new house and happily it came with a prepared, fenced 36x11 ft vegetable garden. However, the previous owners clearly haven't used it in awhile as it is completely overrun with weeds. Luckily it rained last night as this morning my mom and I planned to weed the whole thing. We made it about 2 of the 36 feet in two hours before giving up. Is there an easier way to do this and still get some produce this year?

You could use the area anyway, using weed-wacker to keep things low around desirable plants. Then smother after harvest, until as late as possible in the spring. Sounds like the area would be full of seeds, I might not uncover the whole thing next spring if you don't have the patience/time to pull that many sprouts next summer.
