Please name this weed

Hi everyone,
I live in NC. This weed comes out every year in May and stays till late September. The stems are purple-ish. Nothing seems to work against it. Pulling it out by hand is a losing battle. Spraying it just slows it down a bit, and gets expensive. Nothing will outright kill it. I know that this is probably a fairly common weed, as I have seen it on other lawns around the neighborhood. Would someone please tell me what it is and give me advice on how to get rid of it. Thanks Joe
