what is this? weed? tree????

I have a small patch of my lawn that is pretty much destroyed and I will have to re-do in September. I should have done it this spring but didn't have the time and tried to do it the easy way.

Last year we had some trees removed, and where the guys put their tree removal equipment basically killed that part of my lawn. Now this fall I have these thing popping up all over and I can't get rid of them. I pull them out but it seems the next day there are more. I've put down weed and feed recently but it didn't do a thing.

Any ideas what this is?

What kind of trees were removed? Some kinds sprout from roots that remain in the soil.

And no, weed-n-feed won't work on tree root sprouts.

They were regular oak trees I guess, but in doing some research, these look like Sassafrass trees, but again, not really sure.

Would Round Up take care of these until I can start all over in the fall?
