Something on the thistle stems

Was in the garden weeding today and I found thistle plants with tiny black spots/bugs on the stems. Only on the stems and not on any of the other plants. Peonies, irises, delpiniums, lilies, raspberries, other weeds and grass not touched. Any idea what this/they are? Not that I care too much, just curious. I wish something would destroy these horrible plants!

There are a number of weevils and other insects that do munch on thistles. Some use thistle as an alternative food source if their prefered one is not available.
