not a weed, but what is it??

I was out weeding this morning and ran across this ??? At first, I thought it was a mushroom, then poop. :) It is neither. It was "rooted" in the ground (maybe not real roots, but attached) yet pulled easily out of the ground, and is very light and almost feels fragile, like paper mache. Just curious as to what it might be. Sorry the photo is not more clear...took on my cell phone.
