Please help identify plant/weed

Hi.
Was hoping to help a friend by identifying this plant- any ideas? It's in Chicagoland & amongst grass and planting bed- I think in a semi-shady area.

"Anyone know what this green leafy stuff is? We just had these beds cut out and mulched and now I have little green leaves popping up in my mulch. It stems from this patch in the grass. Is it bad for my flowers? What a pain to pick them all out! And how would I get rid of it permanently?"

I can't see it clearly, maybe violets or Ranunculus, that were not killed before using this bed (below the level of removed material,) or seedlings from seeds in the mulch (or seeds that were residing in the soil already, below the level of what was removed.)
