Invasive weed/plant/tree; serrated spade leaves, runners

Hi there -

We live next to a house that used to have an ugly tree just beyond their fence line which they recently cut down to improve the view of the house for selling it. Ever since that happened we have had long root/runners radiating from that stump into our yard (for 10s of yards) and along the lengths of the runners new plants pop up. The leaves are spade-shaped and have serrated edges. I'm going to talk to the new owners about eradicating the plant/tree but would like to know what we're dealing with. Looks like a poplar leaf, maybe Populus nigra.

I think you nailed it. Sounds like liberal application of a chainsaw and herbicide is the solution. Will offer both to the new neighbor to nip it in the bud. Much appreciated!
