large prickly plant w/ purple type flower

I have had this come up every year, but have cut it down before it had a chance to grow into something, but being lazy this year, I've let it grow. Can anyone identify what this is. I'm actually fond of it. The grayish leaves w/ purple flowers. The sharp prickles on the stalks makes it formidable!!!

Scotch thistles, a noxious weed in most places including Ontario. They put out lots of seeds, so unless you want more of them all over your yard next summer, cut off the flowers before it sets seed.

Here is a link that might be useful: Scotch Thistle

Hi Judy,
Thanks for the info. I don't want them everywhere, so yeah, I will cut off the flowers before they set seed!!
Thanks!
