Timing of pre-em. for POA

I will be putting down a preemergent (Gallery with Team) to control POA annua but am not sure when to do it. It is my understanding that timing is critical and based on the soil temp. being less than 70 degrees. If true, is there a rule of thumb for estimating soil temp.Âs based on actual temps?

I am in zone 5 and temperatures in July have been relatively normal but it has been a very dry summer (which, I assume, means that the soil is warmer than it would be if we had normal precipitation). At the moment, we are having above normal temperatures (high 80Âs, low 90Âs) which are forecasted through this first week in August. Forecasts, of course, can change on a dime and I do not want to miss my window of opportunity by applying too early or too late. Any suggestions???

Thanks.
