Vining Weed in Vegetable Garden--ID Please

Posted by crlloyd Maryland (My Page) on

I have a vining weed that is now producing clusters of small, white flowers. The weed does not appear to be coming from anything in the ground and looks almost like it was just dropped onto the plants. It particularly likes my scallions, beets, and carrots. I have these planted in different beds and this weed has shown up in each of them. The weed vines itself around the vegetable tops and sticks to them. If you try to pull the weed off it will snap the top of the vegetable or the affected leaf. I would appreciate any help in identifying this weed and methods to control it. Thanks

It could also be Nightshade, a relative of potatoes, tomatoes, and peppers. Sometimes where the plant roots into the ground can be difficult to see but by following the stem all the way down you can find it. Dodder usually has a violet, not a white, flower.

Dodder is more likely.

The flowers of dodder that invade vegetable gardens are usually white or cream colored.
