Help Identify this noxious weed

I have a larger bordered garden with multiple plants, and this weed, along with morning glory, is taking over. The tallest I have seen it grow is maybe 1 1/2 feet, and the flower was white with a yellow stamen. The plant smells horrible when the stem is broken and it is nearly impossible to pull up the plant with all of the root system. Flower looks similar to this

but smaller. Any ideas on what is it and how to eradicate it from my garden?

Here are pics of the plant plus root system, sorry no pics of the flower. I think it was flowering some time around june

From the picture and description I would guess it is Houttuynia cordata, matching foliage and scented stem and foliage. Some like the smell, others hate it. Does quite well in full sun when near water, as a matter of fact, it becomes invasive under those conditions. Multi-colored varieties attract people to plant it in their yards, much to their chagrin.
