The picture does not provide enough detail to properly ID that although it does kind of somewhat resemble one of the sedges. Have you asked your local office of the North Carloina State University Cooperative Extension Service for help?

Looks like a nutsedge that's been mown. It's really hard to eradicate.

Tks for replies. Have discovered it is indeed a Yellow Nutsedge. There is a product called "Sedge Hammer" that is known to kill this stuff though and happens to be available in NC.

The active ingrediant in that stuff is bad enough but combined with an inert ingrediant it evidently bocomes more toxic. Weigh the potential degredation of your environment against the benefit of using this. Sedges, as a rule, are wetland plants and although they have adapted to growing in many environments more often then not where I see sedges being a problem is where the soil surface is relatively moist. Maybe something as simple as changing your watering would be enough to eliminate this and then not require a potential poison to be used.
