wild raspberries are weeds too... driving me crazy

Hi, we built a cottage on a small lake and have put in a few small perennial gardens. We have an open area beside the cottage that I'd like to spread with soil and seed it with grass. Unfortunately wild raspberries have taken ahold of the area and are growing everywhere. I've tried pulling them up, but there's too many and their root systems are incredible. How do I get rid of them? is there something non-chemical that I can apply to kill them?

OR... would seeding the grass over top of them do the trick to choke them off? PLZ help
