An Acre of Dead Nettle chocking precious rootings

I'm just sick! I worked myself to death this summer killing off the lawn, tilling a huge area, planting moss and holding off on planting the rootings I was given, untill the moss took hold.

Then as if overnight, dead nittle weeds covered the entire acre,solid! No spot of ground lift untaken! I was hoping they would die of frost bit and not return, but alas, I was informed that their offspring would return 10,000 fold in the spring.

I sprayed roundup on some of them,(careful not to get the rootings), then it rained, so that was for not. It's too cold to go out again, unless that is all there is to do.

Q: What would YOU do? Spray weed killer again now, wait till the thaw (I'm so afraid of killing the rootings by accident.), or something else?

Have the plant identified as to which Lamium (dead nettle) it is. It's important that you determine if it is an annual or a perennial. Annual weeds can be prevented with applications of preemergent herbicides, put down at the appropriate time of year. Perennial weeds are a different story. There isn't anything you can apply that won't also harm your other broadleaved plants.

What are the 'rootings' you mention?

The 'rootings' are various plants that my 'adopted garden mothers' have given me. I tilled, leveled and layed the garden path. Then planted the rootings and "starts" where I wanted them. Sat back and watched...the weeds take over, seems like over night!

I will just have to keep applying the weed killer around my plants I guess,Untill they become fewer. The area I tend will have to be reduced from the 1/2 acred I tilled and prepaired, down to a smaller area. So that I can manage the weeds and not kill myself fighting them off.

No place on God's green earth will you find earth that is not green - unless of course it is covered with oil, glyphosate, or some other deadly witches brew. There is a product made from corn that is natural and is a quality fertilizer that contains a substance that suppresses new seed growth but does not affect established rooted cuttings.

Somewhat like my girlfriend was 5 years ago (5 long years of teaching preaching and showing), she just wanted that magazine cover garden without any learning, without any headaches or soul searching - she wanted it to be safe for her dogs and come in a bottle.

Nettle is not a bad thing if you learn what it is telling you about your soil.

One of the problems with tilling any soil is that you turn up long dormant plant seeds that will then germinate and grow. When tilling new soil you should do that, wait a couple or three weeks to see what germinates and till again, and then wait some more and then till again. It may well be that you need to do this for some time to keep all the "weeds" under control.
First get what you have properly identified and then seriously think about the means of control. Keep in mind that any plant poison is detrimental to you and your environment.
