Great Horned Owls

Here is a picture of a pair of Great Horned Owls just outside our study window this morning. They stayed in this position for over 20 minutes before they were startled by a noise from next door and flew away in separate directions. Sorry for the bad picture but we couldn't get a better picture through the glass.

As you can see in the picture, the owl on top is blind in one eye and was very aware that we were standing at the window looking at them. My daughter was afraid they were hurt because it seemed such an odd position for them to be in and to stay that way without moving, except for their heads.

Does anyone know if owls mate face to face and do they mate this late in the season? If they nest in January or February, aren't these two a little ahead of the game?

lol-harryshoe or is it hairyshoe?

Great picture. I'll bet that was wonderful to see them from your window. I've seen nesting GHOs and also a pair that hunts at night over my friend's property. They're beautiful.

shmeal=did the Great Horned Owls stay in your yard long?

 o
GHOs

What I meant to ask is did you notice them nesting in your yard or nearby after you found them like this and then they flew off?
