Operation Migration Whooping Cranes

Posted by woodlandgal 4 (My Page) on

OM Whooping Cranes raised and trained at the Necedah Wildlife Refuge in central WI (about an hour from me) have safely arrived in Florida today.

They are trained to follow ultralights for their first migration and then will be on their own to migrate back.

Whooping Cranes are an endangered species and this is the ninth year of trying to re-establish an Eastern Migratory flock.

Thanks for posting this good news!

It's amazing what can be done with wildlife through research. This project sounds fascinating.

I remember seeing, about 20 years ago, many different crane species (whooping cranes among them) at a center not far from where you live. It was fascinating too, many of the cranes were (and maybe still are) endangered. All beautiful birds.

Here's to continued success for OM!

That's so neat about the whooping cranes! Cranes are fascinating birds. Are they still as endangered or are they off the endangered list. I'm not sure if I ever saw one in real life but might have at a zoo or something like that. Must be awesome to see. Thanks for reporting that!

For Lizbeth's question about the status of whooping cranes relative to the endangered list - and for anyone else who may have the interest: Whooping Cranes are still very endangered; there are only about 500 in existence, and only 1 migratory flock.

The OM flight is an effort to establish a second migratory flock. I've written at greater length in an article at Suite 101.com linked to below, if you'd wish more information about these beautiful creatures.
