Urban Seattle Backyard Peregrine Falcon (with leg band)

| I haven't posted in a while, so forgive if I seem new.
I have always tried to maintain the tiny backyard to encourage urban wildlife, and have birdfeeders as part of that. So over the years I have had occasional (rare) peregrin falcons visit to hunt, and have even seen a couple of kills in the backyard over the span of 12 years.
This time it is different. A peregrin falcon has been here every day for at least a week.
Sometimes it is hiding from the ganging crows and sometimes it is hunting because of the feeders. Today, I see that it has a blue and black striped leg band, so someone else is interested in this bird as well.
I am so curious and want this bird to be well in the backyard. Does anyone know how I can find out who banded this bird and why? Do they want to know it is here? Do they want to know if it leaves? etc. All thoughts welcome. Others in the neighborhood are interested as well.

I think the bird must be part of a falcon recovery or research program. The Washington State Department of Transportation has had a falcon program, so you could call their office and see what they say. If someone else has a falcon program they will likely know about it. The people who banded the bird will be very appreciative of any information you give them. The banding of a bird can provide information about where the bird was banded and how far it has travelled. Good luck with this.

Bird band reporting information can be found on the link below http://www.pwrc.usgs.gov/BBL/homepage/call800.htm You can now report online. Reporting is very important, so I really urge you to report the band you see on this bird. Thanks! Jill

Here is the peregrine falcon banding specific page. They follow a very specific protocol. http://www.pwrc.usgs.gov/BBL/homepage/pefaprot.htm Jill

Thank you all so much for the links!! I know I could get good information here. I will read through all of the information and follow through with this. The main thing is I don't want to interfere with the bird or the reseach, but I would like people to know it is here. Such a beauty. It was sitting on the fence 5 feet from the window, and I was mesmerized. Thank you all again for this valuable information.

Sorry to top post my own message, but... Now there are two different peregrine falcons that visit the backyard regularly. One is banded but I haven't gotten close enough to get the number off the band. The other is not banded ... now that it is Spring, could this be a mate? In any case, I reported the information on the banded bird as above, and will be watching to see if I have any other substantial information to send to the banding studies. The unbanded bird seems to have great hunting skills. It hangs out in a little hiding hole on the fence during the last 2 hours of daylight, very patiently and still, then systematically dives into nearby evergreen shrubs to try and catch a meal. It was successful tonight. I love it.
