Racoons, being omnivores, eat almost anything. You probably cannot stop them. I would put up a sturdier feeder. Mine is a metal one, that closes with the weight of a squirrel, on a length of copper pipe. Usually works and not harasses by racoons, although they are common. In N. Jersey, they are having trouble with black bears raiding the bird feeders,so racoons seem like pikers to me. My feeder will be totalled if the bears move into S. Jersey.

A good baffle might deter a raccoon if the feeder is far from trees.

unfortunately, the feeder hangs pretty close to the trunk. Guess I'll just replace the stiff metal hangers with chain.

I don't mind the critter, I just hate that the seed gets dumped on the ground when he breaks the feeder.

It comes to mind that squirrels would only be active in the day, unless they are the flying (gliding) sorts that are beautiful and nocturnal. I did have a baffle I made of a sheet of metal from the hardware store on one feeder for years that kept the grey squirrels off, but that feeder has been replaced with the commercially purchased one. It was costly, a souvenoir from a trip to Bean's in Maine, and has worked well for these four years.
