Dirtgirl, whoa, talk about serendipity. Less than 1/2 an hour ago, I was coming up the drive and past the box where the flying squirrels have nested for years. I tapped on the box and found it empty - not even any nesting material. I've not seen any evidence of them at all this winter. Has it been just too warm?

I had a great hickory year and a so-so acorn year - some trees put forth in great quantities but others didn't have many acorns at all.

Hope we can get a few others to chime in, perhaps add some other insight.

One year we were positively THICK with them. We were constantly having flyers gliding past the garage and this would trigger the automatic light. The joke around here was the need to find a security light with red-eye reduction for the squirrels.
Course, there is a tree every 5-10 feet or so, surrounded by an ultra plush carpet of leaves and moss so I guess there weren't too many crash-and-burns...that thing flashing on must have been like an atomic sunrise to those little cuties.
Sure do miss their twitterings.

We've seen them this winter in our garden in southern, central Massachusetts. Can't provide any insight, however, as this is the first year we've noticed them. In fact, it was thanks to this site that we were able to determine what they were. Sorry to hear yours are absent - we love having them, and hope they have made a permanent home nearby.
