I have two that have gotten to about 8' after 4 years - they're not super full, though, and some of the branches are much longer than others. They seem to grow fairly slowly (mine are in part shade, though), but they have finally started suckering - which I want. Frankly, crowding out privet is probably desirable...but I don't know if they'll do it :)

My older plants (6+ years) are all in the 8-12' range, generally barrel-shaped to rounded (some of the width due to ice covering in 2003 winter). Arrowwood in average soils and average moisture should be able to grow 1-1.5' per year easily, and faster with higher fertility/moisture.

And I agree with jill on crowding out the privet; makes room for more viburnums.

I just planted 3 viburnum-arrowwood, each about 4.5-5 ft tall. I am new to these plants. The tag says they provide good fall color. Are you pleased with the fall color on your viburnum-arrowwood?

I'm really excited to see if they will set berries for the birds but pretty fall color would be a bonus!

A lovely plant, but quiet and well-behaved. If you want to crowd out nonnatives, try grey dogwood instead. I've got both in the same shrub border, and the arrowwood basically stays put, while the grey suckers all over the place. Both are lovely plants and wonderful wildlife plants.

For fall color, arrowwood turns a maroon-purple. It's pretty but not especially notable--but mine is right in front of a Virginia creeper, and surrounded by grey dogwood, and nothing could compete with that.
