Strange Animal Tracks - Graphic Heavy

We found these tracks in the snow around the side of the house and have no idea what they are. As seen in the pic, they are about as large as a woman's hand. There are no known bears in our Southern Ohio area and they do not look like pics of bear tracks I found on the Net.

Can anyone identify them???

Looks like dog prints to me.

At the very least it seems to be of the canine family, you can see the claw marks in the tracks(cat's claws are retractable, will usually only be visible when they are running or pouncing)and the heel marks are much smaller than the toe marks.

You're right that its not a bear track. Do you have a neighbour with a very large dog, say 90-100lbs or over?
I'm not sure of their range, and it would seem unlikely that close to your house but do you have wolves where you live?

I've included a link to an animal tracking website, and there is a picture of a dog track in snow towards the bottom of the page, and it looks very similar. You can also search other tracks if you think that its something else, there is a good list. Here is another site that compares a dog's foot to a wolf track: http://wolves.wordpress.com/2006/10/19/comparison-of-wolf-and-dog-tracks/
Is it possible to measure one of the tracks?(if its still there)

Here is a link that might be useful: Dog tracks

The overall look is of domestic dog. The prints are kind of big, but have melted out, and I do not think the origial print is large enough to merit wolf size. Domestic dog toes may splay a bit more than wolf, giving the overall print a rounder look, rather than oblong. Domestic dog prints also don't tend to directly register in top of one another, where as wolf prints do. Also, if it's a wandering, distracted line tracks, it probably dog. Pictures can only tell so much...

Domestic dog.

Wolf tracks are much more pointed with the middle 2 toes being much further forward then the 2 outer toes.

As the snow melts those trackes will melt also and get bigger. They dont look to be very fresh.

Still a rather large dog. Lab maybe? then tend to have large feet for their body size. Maybe a great dane??

Thanks for all the above responses. We are thinking that the tracks may forever remain a mystery. The snow had melted somewhat when the pics were taken so the original could have been smaller. One neighbor has a Mastiff but the dog had not been outside his fenced area, plus the tracks were far bigger that what the Mastiff could have made.

The tracks were not wandering, but more like those of a wolf. However, there are reportedly no wolves in Ohio.

Whatever left the tracks is certainly large enough that I would not want to meet up with it face to face!!!! :-)
