first babies of the season

Well the award goes to the red-bellied woodpeckers. I figured I would hear the first little cheepings of the season coming from a robin's nest or a starling's nest in town, but this morning as I was putting out the dog's food I heard babies softly crying from somewhere high up above the house. I looked up and saw a head poking out of a hole, and when the parent flew out, the peepings resumed. Just a week or two ago I saw an adult having a skirmish with a red-headed woodpecker around the same tree, and I assumed it might be over nesting rights. I had no idea that not only had the RBW laid claim to the tree, it had already had a nest there with eggs. I had hoped the red-head would come out victorious since we seem to be having fewer and fewer of them. I am not terribly upset...if there is one thing we have an abundance of here, it's old dead trees so cavity nesters have it made.
