bat box questions

Hi all. I am going to put up a bat box on my property to gobble up all the mozzies out there. I know we have them because last summer there were 2 flying around the roof of the house.

What I want to know is this:

the websites I've read say to mount it under the eaves rather than on a tree for better luck. Also, that it should be in at least 8 hours direct sun and out of the way of artificial lights. Do they mean motion lights at night?

We live in the woods and so we have motion lights on 2 corners of the house. The only side of the property that doesn't is the back but it doesn't get 8 hours of sun.

Does the artificial light from the motion lights blind them when they're flying at night? If I mount the box in a tree higher than the level of the motion light and slighty out of the path of it, will that be better?

Or should I mount it on the house, under the eaves at the peak of the attic, which is significantly higher than the range of the motion light. It would get some of it but nothing directly in it's path.

I'd hate to blind them after I get them to live there.

Any suggestions would help.

RE: bat box questions

I would not mount a box on my house. Guano is an issue. Great fertilizer but horrible paint. My beau still refuses to plant his tomatoes under the bat box even though it's great fertilizer. I tell him no one would know. :)

My boxes are post mounted on a 16' 4x4, in a clear area 10' away from the nearest tree or obstacle. Morning sun is very important to warm the box up first thing - bats need heat after a chilly night.

Try here - Bat Conservation Management for bat questions - these guys are very helpful and experienced. Has how to mount a bat house. Check their catalog. Also the Pennsylvania Game Commission has great info on bats. They do a lot of large scale bat projects and experience in successful bat homes.

I've never had problems with exterior lights, motion or other. They fly around the lights for the bugs but I don't recall them tripping any motion lights...guess they would but they are pointed in a specific ground area.
