Spring means baby animals

Just a reminder; if you find baby animals,leave them alone if at all possible. They aren't abandoned-the mother stays away most of the time to avoid attracting predators. Baby birds on the ground are usually fledglings learning to fly. You can put those up on a low branch. Mother birds will still feed them- they can't smell you! Birds don't have a sense of smell like mammals do. Most baby animals grow fast and will leave on their own shortly. If you find bunnies, just don't mow that area for a week or so. Fawns will relocate every day or two to avoid predators. Racoons and such can scratch and bite! Most "adopted" baby animals die shortly anyway because of special dietary needs not being met; cow milk doesn't cut it for wild animals! Enjoy the moment of watching the babies, and let them be! Mom will be back after dark to take care of them.

We found a baby bunny in our yard once. I didn't know what to do so I called a naturalist at the museum. He said leave it alone and that its family was nearby. He also said that rabbit families stay within an acre area for generations...so that baby bunny's great-great grandparents were probably born and raised right there in my yard!

Very good advise! I did want to mention one thing though, if you find a tiny baby squirrel out of a tree, it IS because something has happened to the Mom, baby squirrels will seek out help when they are starving and cold, we were able to save 3 of 4 last year,found the last one still up in the nest screaming for help, one other had already died in the nest. (of course they went to a rehabber) All 3 were able to be released when they were old enough. Those rehabbers are very special people and very rarley get any recognition. If you have a need for one, please make a donation, I know the ones I use here pay for everything they need to care for the animals needs from their own pocket!!!!!
