awwwww it's so cute.

Was coming in the house and noticed something crawling about the top step in the dim light. After staring down at this creature for a second, I realized it was the first of the Brood, or the periodical cicadas, that we are forecast to once again play host to this year. I carried the little bugger in and put it on my ficus, where it promptly climbed up a bit, found a satisfactory perch, and is now fully emerged and in the process of drying. Little red eyes and all.

I don't mind them. In fact they are rather fascinating, even if I did have ringing ears for a while that last go-around so many years ago. Oddly enough, I went out with a flashlight and looked around for others and don't see a thing yet. Perhaps this one is the early bird. Unfortunately, it doesn't stand to reap the benfits of emerging along with a mass of others...it will almost certainly get snatched up when I turn it out in the morning.
